July 5, 2016

Happy 4th of July! Today is a day filled with celebrations! Whether you are having a barbeque with your friends or a full on party with cirque performers, everyone will be having a fantastic time! Sometimes in the midst of all of the parties, we forget about some of the origins of the holiday!

  1. Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 – John Hancock and Charles Thompson. The rest of them signed the document on August 2nd 1776.

  2. Three of the first five presidents of the United States died on the 4th of July – John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe. Both Jefferson and Adams passed away on that day in 1826.

  3. Congress officially declared the 4th of July a holiday in 1870.

  4. America’s 30th president, Calvin Coolidge, was born on July 4th, 1872.

  5. When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, approximately 2.5 million people lived in the United States.

  6. 87.5% ($2.8 million) of imported U.S. flags and 97% of fireworks are imported from China.

  7. Approximately 150 million hot dogs will be consumed on the 4th of July.

  8. The White House had their first 4th of July party in 1801.

  9. Fireworks made their fist appearance in the celebrations in 1777. The celebration also included bonfires and bells.

  10. Thomas Jefferson was the first president to throw a party for the 4th of July in the White House. There is no doubt that he had a live band to help with the entertainment.
